The report "The Living Standards Dimension for the Human Development Index: Measuring poverty with Big Data' brings a measure called the Living Standards Index that addresses the multi-faceted and complex nature of poverty by combining eight indicators to evaluate the provision of services of the 2,284 counties across the country. The data collected from this report is now available in an interactive visualization map. The visualization map allows users to zoom in on particular provinces to see how it is doing across all eight indicators, as well to be able to pick one indicator and see its strengths and weaknesses across the country.

Disaster Management

Environment and Energy

  • 60 per cent of China’s buildings are in rural areas, made from clay bricks which have poor insulating qualities and require more energy to produce. This project aims to facilitate the transformation of local markets to more energy-efficient alternatives.

  • As a signatory to the Montreal Protocol, China is obliged to meet emissions reduction targets for Ozone Depleting Substances for several intervals, and is making efforts to meet these goals with UNDP's assistance.

  • China, the second largest economy in the world, has become the world’s largest energy producer and consumer. With its great dependency on fossil fuels, China became the largest emitter of greenhouse gases and has been seriously affected by air pollution. As a clean energy solution, hydrogen can be produced from various renewable energy resources and has 0 emissions after combustion. Hydrogen Economy, a future which fully utilizes hydrogen as the main power source to meet the energy demands of society, can therefore help address energy issues in China.

South-South & Global Cooperation

  • Trilateral cooperation offers a unique approach to development where multiple actors join hands in promoting new, innovative solutions that build on international best practices and concrete experiences gained in other countries under a common goal of reducing poverty and enhancing mutual development benefits. Since 2010, UNDP has been implementing seven trilateral cooperation projects together with China and other developing countries in the agriculture, renewable energy, and disaster management sectors.
