Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon!

It is truly an honor and a pleasure to have you all here today to celebrate the launch of the 2017 Report on the Sustainable Development of Chinese Enterprises Overseas and the signing for the strategic partnership between UNDP China and the Hainan Airlines Group.

This is the second publication of our report series on the sustainable development of Chinese enterprises overseas, as the 2017 Report was launched yesterday during the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to all organizations and individuals that have contributed to the report preparation process. I also would like to thank everyone for your support and continued interest that enable the successful completion of this report.

The 2030 Agenda and China’s Belt and Road Initiative share a vision that balanced, coordinated and sustainable development depends on deepened global partnership that are mutually beneficial and inclusive. In this process, China not only plays a critical role in implementing the 2030 Agenda, but also has great capacity to drive regional development through strengthening investment, trade and economic cooperation along the Belt and Road.

As a key actor in the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises have enormous potential in advancing the process on the 2030 Agenda. Indeed, decades of “going abroad” have equipped Chinese enterprises with technical and managerial know-how, and ever-increasing awareness of corporate sustainability through constantly improving responsible practices beyond just business.

While we are delighted to see that host country stakeholders have acknowledged Chinese enterprises’ contributions to economic and social development of local communities – especially in improving infrastructure, upgrading industries, creating jobs and transferring technology – we recognize substantial opportunities for cooperation among different stakeholders, which should be based on effective information disclosure and sharing.

To bridge this gap, we hope our reports on corporate sustainability can garner further attention from interested parties to raise awareness and call for collective actions. The first publication, launched in 2015, has received tremendous attention from all over the world.

Building on this impactful groundwork, the 2017 report presents to further facilitate information exchange between international community, governments and Chinese enterprises, and bring expertise, networks and resources to harness the capacity of the private sector for sustainable development.

The future of sustainable development calls for joint actions, innovative solutions and effective implementation. Today, we are announcing a strategic partnership with the HNA Group, taking us a step forward to transform this shared vision into practical actions. We hope this event marks the start of a series of in-depth discussions and collaboration on the sustainable development performance of Chinese enterprises overseas.

Thank you again for joining us today, and I wish you fruitful deliberation.
