Beijing, 4 August – To raise public awareness on the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and help China reach the goals and targets set forth by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) China today launched its Massive Open Online Course on Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Goals (UNDP SDG MOOC) developed in cooperation with NetEase Media, as the first knowledge product to combine the global Agenda and China’s current situation.

On September 26, 2015, 193 UN member states adopted the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 sub-targets, covering poverty alleviation, health, education, gender equality, energy and climate change. China has made a commitment that it will shoulder the responsibility of implementing the 2030 development agenda, and seek solidarity and cooperation to constantly push the cause of global development.

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an interactive and free online course, available on NetEase’s open course platform that will introduce participants to the 17 SDGs and the situation of each Goal in China over 19 modules. Furthermore, the modules explore the opportunities and challenges of the Goals in China, and provides initial recommendations for policy makers, the private sector and the public on the role they can take to help achieve these goals. Participants who complete the course will obtain a certificate from UNDP.

Featured speakers in the course include UNDP experts and development practitioners as well as influential experts from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Ministry of Environmental Protection, The Energy Research Institute of NDRC and China Youth & Children Research Association, amongst other prominent institutions. “UNDP is firmly committed to assist with implementation of the SDGs and they will be the central priority in our work for the next 15 years,” stated Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Director of UNDP China during the launch event. “It is very important that as many people as possible get familiar with and learn about the SDGs and its benefits so that they can gain an understanding of how achieving the SDGs can improve society and their lives.”

“NetEase Media is very glad to have co-developed the UNDP MOOC on Agenda 2030/ Sustainable Development Goals with UNDP, and we hope this platform can be a useful tool in spreading awareness of the SDGs to online audiences. Public engagement is important and NetEase is glad to contribute its platform to facilitate engagement from public. We are proud supporters of the SDGs.” said Li An, NetEase Media Marketing General Manager.

UNDP’s support to countries in achieving sustainable, inclusive and resilient development is a key part of the 2030 Agenda.
