Beijing, 15 June -  An event themed Going Green-Keeping the Blue Cool was held at the United Nations Compound to advocate the importance of green technology to change old patterns of development and lifestyle towards a more environmental friendly society.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in China received 53 Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) free Energy Efficient air conditioners from the Haier Group, a company dedicated to market transformation towards higher energy efficiency AC while minimizing the environmental impact,  as a supplement to UNDP‘s overall efforts in being a responsible office to reduce its own carbon footprint while working with the Chinese government on environment protection.

In his opening remark, Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Director of UNDP China noted the importance of green technology and the support of the private sector, “impressive results in HCFC reduction could not have be achieved without the very active engagement of companies and enterprises from the private sectors like Haier and industrial associations, such as the China Household Electrical Appliances Association. The Haier produced Air Conditioners are a great example of how it is possible to, through clever design and foresight, address multiple environmental challenges.”

Fighting against ozone depletion and climate change mitigation is a top priority for UNDP, together with the Foreign Economy and Cooperation Office of Ministry of Environment Protection (FECO), UNDP has been assisting the Chinese government to fulfill its commitment in phasing out ODS like CFC and HCFC. The joint cooperation on the Montreal Protocol projects have ensured the reduction of more than 500 ODP tones of HCFC consumption every year, and directly eliminated 8 million tons of CO2-equivalent emission by 2015, which ensured China’s phase-out target in 2015 was met ahead of time.

Mr. Xiao Xuezhi, Deputy Director General of Environment Protection (FECO) participated in today’s event. He stated “China is at a critical stage in its transformational development. The goals and targets set by the “Construction of Eco-Civilization”, Green Development as well as the 2030 Sustainable development goals encourage industries to innovate their technologies while taking environment and energy efficiency into consideration.” The air conditions donated by Haier adopt R290 as refrigerants, have the best ecological and thermodynamic characteristic among the all the refrigerants suitable for air conditioning and commercial refrigeration use. Thanks to its greater energy efficiency, ease to be produced and high compatibility, R290 is recognized as a clean and green solution to refrigeration and air condition industries.

“We are here today not just to share the idea of “Going green and keeping the blue cool”, said Mr. Wang Youning, Vic- President of Haier home appliance industry group, “on behalf of Haier, I hope more companies, institutions and consumers can join us, to expedite the energy efficient technology innovation and commercialization, and protect the environment for us all.”
