UNDP and United Front Work Department Discuss Poverty Alleviation Strategies

19 May 2011

As UNDP looks to strengthen its poverty alleviation portfolio and contribute to greater poverty reduction in China and the world, Ms. Renata Dessallien, UNDP Representative, attended a meeting with the Vice-Minister of the United Front Work Department (UFWD), Mr. Quan Zhezhu, on 19 May 2011. During which, Mr. Quan provided a comprehensive introduction of the functions and the work of the UWFD, in areas of poverty alleviation and south-south cooperation.

Having discussed the role of the UNDP in China, Ms. Dessallien stressed the importance of cooperating with the UFWD to deliver tangible, pragmatic results for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, through existing initiatives such as the ongoing Guangcai Programme, and through the development of new partnerships and collaboration.

Initiated by a group of Chinese entrepreneurs, the Guangcai Programme’s main focus is to aid the poor, achieve common prosperity, promote equality and moral integrity, and repay society, and is therefore seen as a crucial framework for building a strong working platform for UNDP and the UFWD to further human development.
