    Associate Administrator meets with Ministry of Foreign Affairs Assistant Minister

    UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, met with Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Zhang Kunsheng, on 16 September 2011, to discuss progress made since the signing of a strategic agreement on South-South Cooperation, entered into by UNDP and the Government of China in 2009.

    Associate Administrator Delivers UN Distinguished Lecture on Sustainable Development at Peking University

    Recognising academia as an important contributor to China’s ability to share its development experiences with the world, through South-South Cooperation, Under Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan took part in a special guest lecture entitled ‘Towards Sustainable Development: New Challenges and Opportunities’. Held at Peking University, on 16 September 2011, Ms. Grynspan was accompanied by a large UNDP delegation including UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Renata Dessallien. As President of Peking University, Professor Zhou Qifeng was also in attendance.

    UNDP Recognises Peace and Development Foundation at Award Ceremony

    An award ceremony was held on the afternoon of 16 September 2011 in Beijing to recognise the tremendous support rendered to the work of UNDP in China by the Peace and Development Foundation (PDF). During this event, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator, presented Honourary Awards to Mr. Daniel Fung, Chairman and Founding Member of the PDF, and Ms. Kathy Chiu, Chairperson Emeritus and Founding Member of the PDF. A separate Appreciation Award was also presented to Ms. Josie Jin Zhou, UNDP China Chief Advisor for Hong Kong and the Macao Special Administrative Regions.

    Launch Ceremony of the Partnership Between UNDP, MaryKay and All China Women's Federation

    UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, attended the Past and Future: China Women's Development Foundation Mary Kay Women's Small Business Fund 10 Year Anniversary, on 14 September 2011. The event which was hosted by CCTV Anchor and UNDP Special Advisor on Partnership and Communications, Ms. Tian Wei, was attended by more than 120 Fund beneficiaries, and senior dignitaries representing each of the three main partners, including Ms. Chen Zhili, President of the All-China Women’s Federation, Mr. Paul Mak, President of Mary Kay (China), and Ms. Grynspan of UNDP. Ms. Grynspan delivered a powerful speech on the need to empower women.

    As part of the second phase of the ‘Zoom-in On Poverty’ Global Photo Contest, co-organised by UNDP and Xinhua News Agency, a launch ceremony was held in Beijing on 9 August 2011 to mark the second phase of this global campaign to combat poverty. This event was attended by UNDP Deputy Country Director, Mr. Napoleon Navarro, Xinhua News Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Wang Yao and Reuters North Asia Manager, Mr. Phil Smith.

    China Provincial Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Conference

    At the conclusion of a three-year UNDP ‘Provincial Programmes on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation in China’ initiative, a conference was held in Beijing on 4 August 2011 to discuss the outcomes of efforts to put China’s National Climate Change Programme into practice. More than 100 participants took part in the event, including representatives from UNDP, EU, Norway, 32 Provincial Governments; non-government organisations, bilateral aid agencies and donors. Having assisted in the development and implementation of national and sub-national climate change programmes in 26 provinces and autonomous regions, as well as a further 6 to be finalised, this conference allowed for development experiences to be shared among the projects major stakeholders.

    Knowing Your Environmental Rights is the Key to a Clean Environment

    In conjunction with the Global Eco-Forum in Guiyang (16-17 July), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a side event today to raise awareness about the issue of environmental rights among the general public in China. As China seeks to encourage greater public engagement in holding those responsible for environmental degradation to accountability, this initiative was based on a UNDP project entitled “Protect the Environmental Rights and Justice of the Public”, and is seen as a crucial step towards public environmental litigation systems in China.

    The launch of the Emerging Countries Network for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

    A roundtable event held in Beijing on 11 July 2011 marked the launch of the Emerging Countries Network for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth. This joint initiative, established between UNDP China and the Institute of Advanced Studies for Sustainability at Renmin University, aims to promote a diversified perspective towards South-South Cooperation among leading academic institutions and experts in emerging countries by sharing development experiences and lessons.

    Climate Change and Green Low Carbon Development Conference

    A high-level international conference on Climate Change and Green Low Carbon Development was conducted in Beijing on 22-24 June 2011, as part of the National Development and Reform Commission’s (NDRC) efforts to demonstrate the policies and actions being undertaken by the Chinese Government to address climate change and shift towards a low carbon economy. Promoted as a platform for enhanced policy dialogue and climate financing, within an international framework of cooperation, the event was attended by over 300 senior representatives from global development stakeholders, including the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, foreign financial investment institutions and multinational enterprises, and leaders from some of China’s low carbon pilot provinces and cities.

    Equitable Development Takes Centre Stage at the Liangjiang Forum

    Promoted as the gateway to China’s western regions, the 2011 Liangjiang Forum was held in Chongqing on 18-19 June 2011. The event, which was hosted by the Chongqing Municipal Government, the Development Research Centre of the State Council (DRC), the China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), UNDP, and the Hong Kong World Trade Centre Association, saw UNDP Administrator, Ms. Helen Clark, address over 300 participants via a recorded video message.

    Resident Representative Supports Public Sector Reform on Visit to Shanxi

    UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for China, Ms. Renata Dessallien, travelled to the Shanxi Provincial Capital, Taiyuan, in order to attend the Seminar on China’s Public Service Unit (PSU) Reform: Theory, Concepts, Practices and Prospects. Sponsored by the China Research Society for Public Sector Reform and hosted by its local counterparts, the Shanxi Provincial Commission Office for Public Sector Reform and the Shanxi Provincial Society for Public Sector Reform, this conference provided a platform for dialogue on practical solutions to challenges in promoting PSU reform. It was attended by senior government officials from more than 10 provinces representing north, south and east China, including Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Hainan, who were joined by researchers from the National Development Research Centre of the State Council and experts on governance and public sector reform at Peking University.

    International Forum on Judges Training

    Organized by the National Judges College, under the EU-China Delegation and UNDP’s Governance for Equitable Development Project, the International Forum on Judges Training was held in Beijing on 7-10 June 2011. The event was attended by UNDP Deputy Country Director, Ms. Silvia Morimoto, and Justice Wan E’Xiang, Vice-President of the Supreme Court of China, as well as a number of foreign legal dignitaries and scholars from China, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, South Korea, the United States, Hong Kong and Macau.
