Dr. Rajendra K. UNDP China Signs Cooperation Agreement with Wuhan Kaidi Electric Power Co., Ltd. on "Sustainable Biomass Energy Development in China"
In partnership with China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), UNDP China signed a cooperation agreement with Wuhan Kaidi Electric Power Co., Ltd., to work together on a project entitled Sustainable Biomass Energy Development in China, a 3-year endeavor worth USD 5.8 million.

The inaugural 2014 Deloitte China Sustainability Awards, supported by the United Nations Development Programme, were presented to multinational companies on 27 February 2014 in Shanghai. The Awards aim to honour and encourage best practices in sustainability among multinational companies (MNCs) in China and showcase the essence of such practices for a more sustainable future.

The new and comprehensive UNDP Development Report on China’s historic urbanisation can now be heard as well as read. An English audiobook version of the report (along with an eBook version) is now available on Amazon, Audible and iTunes. The audiobook is the first in UNDP history.

The Beijing chapter of the national “The Future We Want 2013” event was jointly held by the United Nations Development Programme, China Business Network, and Giant Bicycles on 19 December in Yongdingmen Park. The theme of the campaign is closely in line with one of UNDP’s current principal interests – pursuing a smarter, greener urbanization path for China. Transport is an essential part of building livable cities, and cycling is one of the healthiest, most environmental friendly transport solutions. The event highlights the viability of a low-carbon lifestyle in China’s cities. UNDP hopes to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle and help meet environmental challenges through its green consumption campaign.

The UN High-Level Symposium on Sustainable Urbanization and Sustainable Cities was held by UNDESA in Yangzhou from December 16th to 18th. Participants including Wu Hongbo, USG in charge of UNDESA, UNHABITAT, officials from 27 countries, and CPC Secretary and Mayor of Yangzhou.

Although the world did not end in 2012, dark times followed in the wake of natural and man-made disasters. Pain and destruction caused by the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 still linger today. Tyhoon Haiyan left more than 10 million people homeless; survivors fought and panicked over shortages in food, drinking water, and medicine. In the summer of this year, floods also swept the northeast of China, cutting through Sichuan province, Guangdong province, and Guangxi province. They flattened homes, bringing with them landslides and other secondary disasters.

Government, academia and civil society representatives meet in Beijing to review impact of laws on country’s HIV response
Representatives from government, academia and community based organisations met in Beijing this week for a consultation on HIV and the law. The meeting, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), China’s Renmin University, and the China Red Ribbon Beijing Forum on HIV and Rights, looked at the positive and negative impacts of existing laws on China’s response to HIV. Particular focus was given to populations most affected by HIV, including men who have sex with men, sex workers and people who inject drugs. The meeting was held at China’s Renmin University, and with support from UNAIDS, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS.

The Future We Want is an opportunity for a national and international conversation about how to achieve a better future for our children. This year the focus will be mainly on transport solutions. The ceremony included speeches from UNDP, China Business Network, the World Wide Fund and from sponsors Giant Bicycles and Samsung. These immediately grappled with questions about building a better future – considering solutions in green technology and green transport amongst others.
