    The sky was gray when the workforce left the relative comfort of the bus. Once outside the workforce shuffled along to the edge of the forest, where the mixed group of people, including many women and children, gathered around to receive instructions on how to use the assorted shovels and pickaxes that lay in front of them.

    BRESL project to expand in potential new initiative abroad

    On 2 April 2014, the China Delegation led by Mr. Xie Ji, Deputy Director General of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environment Protection of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), visited the Myanmar government and UNDP Myanmar in Rangoon. The objective of the visit was to expand the main achievements of the Barrier Removal to the Cost Effective Development and Implementation of Energy Efficiency Standards and Labeling Project (BRESL), a regional project jointly carried out by NDRC and UNDP, with six countries involved: Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

    UN staff promotes green transport, joins national biking event

    The Beijing chapter of the national “The Future We Want 2013” event was jointly held by the United Nations Development Programme, China Business Network, and Giant Bicycles on 19 December in Yongdingmen Park. The theme of the campaign is closely in line with one of UNDP’s current principal interests – pursuing a smarter, greener urbanization path for China. Transport is an essential part of building livable cities, and cycling is one of the healthiest, most environmental friendly transport solutions. The event highlights the viability of a low-carbon lifestyle in China’s cities. UNDP hopes to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle and help meet environmental challenges through its green consumption campaign.

    Emergency Kit Workshop encourages innovation, inspires youth to creativity

    Although the world did not end in 2012, dark times followed in the wake of natural and man-made disasters. Pain and destruction caused by the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 still linger today. Tyhoon Haiyan left more than 10 million people homeless; survivors fought and panicked over shortages in food, drinking water, and medicine. In the summer of this year, floods also swept the northeast of China, cutting through Sichuan province, Guangdong province, and Guangxi province. They flattened homes, bringing with them landslides and other secondary disasters.

    Government, academia and civil society representatives meet in Beijing to review impact of laws on country’s HIV response

    Representatives from government, academia and community based organisations met in Beijing this week for a consultation on HIV and the law. The meeting, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), China’s Renmin University, and the China Red Ribbon Beijing Forum on HIV and Rights, looked at the positive and negative impacts of existing laws on China’s response to HIV. Particular focus was given to populations most affected by HIV, including men who have sex with men, sex workers and people who inject drugs. The meeting was held at China’s Renmin University, and with support from UNAIDS, the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS.
