UNDP and CASS Jointly Support Green Development in Fenghua

14 January, Ningbo-- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) confirmed a partnership today to jointly support the green development in Fenghua District of Ningbo City. UNDP and CASS will jointly conduct pilot planning for green development in Bay Development District Fenghua, Ningbo, to contribute to the transition towards green development pattern in China.

The pilot aims to promote the progress of 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda at local level in China, and in the same time also contribute to the realization of Green Development Approach of the Five Major Development Concepts of China. District planning and consultation will be offered by UNDP and CASS, through scientific evaluation of local context and with reference to international successful practices. The objectives of the green planning will include promotion of green economy, green infrastructure and green management during the 13th Five Year Plan period in Ningbo Fenghua Bay Development District. In future, the District also committed to support the organization of the international forum on green development co-hosted by UNDP and CASS, as well as to host an Education and Research Center of CASS.

At the launch ceremony, a trilateral agreement was signed by Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Director of UNDP China; Huang Xiaoyong, President of CASS Graduate School; and Chen Hongwei, Deputy Party Secretary of Fenghua. The event was also participated by Pan Jiahua, Director-General of CASS Institute of Urban Development and Environment/Center for Sustainable Development Research; Gao Haomeng, Party Secretary of Fenghua; and Zhang Wenbin, Acting Governor of Fenghua. The pilot and planning work is formally kicked off with the event.

 “Ningbo is a regional center in Yangtzi River Delta and Fenghua Binhai District has good ecological environment and foundation to pursue green development” said Patrick Haverman, Deputy Country Director of UNDP China, “This pilot will make positive impact on SDGs progress in China at local level, practically fulfill green development target as set in China’s Five Major Development Concept, as well as serve the Belt and Road Initiative.”

Huang Xiaoyong, President of CASS Graduate School emphasized that CASS is honored to provide intellectual support together with UNDP to support green development in Fenghua. CASS will also establish an Education and Research Center in Fenghua, and look forward to contribute a good case from China to global green development.

Gao Haomeng, Party Secretary of Fenghua noted that Fenghua Government is confident to its future development with pilot support from UNDP and CASS. The Bay Development District will be developed in a green model as advised by UNDP and CASS, and he expect to accumulate visible experiences to contribute to knowledge exchange of global sustainable development.
