The opening ceremony of the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) was held on 20 May 2014. The high-level event was attended by the United Nations Secretary-General, 11 Heads of State, and delegations from 40 countries and international organizations.

The two-day Conference will be themed around increasing dialogue, mutual trust, and collaboration to build a new Asia. China, which will assume the CICA presidency from 2014 to 2016, is expected to play a more important role in leading the regional body in its efforts to promote peace and development in Asia.

The Secretary-General discussed China’s presidency of the summit, remarking, "I have great expectation in China's leadership and vision in leading this CICA process … I hope through this CICA summit, the leaders of the Asia-Pacific region will be able to promote more harmonious [development] through dialogue."

Against the backdrop of the complex security situation in the region, Asian countries will strive to address challenges and threats in both traditional and non-traditional security fields. Through CICA, participating countries hope to inject fresh vitality into solving long-standing issues, including establishing stability in Afghanistan and reaching agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme.
