UNDP to Focus on Social Governance and Water Resource Management in Ningbo

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Renata Dessallien, travelled to Ningbo on 5-6 March 2012, to hold discussions on potential areas of cooperation. During her visit, Ms. Dessallien attended a seminar on ‘Social Governance Assessments: Theories and Practices’, where she was joined by Ms. Chen Yijun, Vice-Mayor of Ningbo; Professor Yu Keping, Director of the China Centre for Comparative Politics and Economics (CCCPE), and a number of leading experts in areas such as political science, law, economic and gender. The event was followed by a visit to one of several local communities currently pioneering social governance innovation under a project between UNDP and the China Centre for Comparative Politics and Economics, where she exchanged experiences and best practices with leading development practitioners from Ningbo, Shenzhen, Nantong and Beijing.

Ms. Dessallien also met the Mayor of Ningbo Municipal Government, where she highlighted the impressive steps that Ningbo has taken in social and economic development and social management innovation, as well as the importance of sharing its wealth of knowledge and successful experiences with the world. During the meeting, Mayor Liu expressed his strong desire to cooperate with UNDP, by drawing on its international experience and expert resources to establish Ningbo as a foundation for advanced small and medium-sized river treatment systems and social governance innovation. A separate meeting was held between Ms. Dessallien and the President of the Yinzhou Foundation to explore a possible partnership with the Foundation in the area of rural development.
