Local Governance Innovation and Excellence Recognised at Award Ceremony

08 Jan 2012

As China continues to progress towards its vision of creating a equitable and harmonious Xiaokang society, Ms. Silvia Morimoto, UNDP Deputy Country Director, attended the 6th Innovations and Excellence in Chinese Local Governance Award Ceremony on 8 January 2012. Each year, this event sees some of the nation's top political scientists and public administration experts gather together to evaluate a shortlist of 25 nominated government agencies put forward for 10 awards. Local government initiatives are judged based on six criteria, namely the degree of creativity, initiative, social benefits, significance, cost-effectiveness and transferability. Some of this year's award winners include the Hebei Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau's River Pollution Control and Ecological Watershed Compensation Mechanism, and the Suining Municipal CPC Committee's Social Stability Risk Assessment Mechanism, in Sichuan Province. In the past, the meeting has been considered as a prestigious and highly successful incentive mechanism for improving the quality of public services since it commenced in 2000.
