Ms. Rebeca Grynspan attended the 2011 World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos
In her joint capacity as UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan attended the 2011 World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos (14-16 September 2011) in Dalian, China, on 15 September 2011. As a highly anticipated senior-level annual global forum focused on improving the state of the world by engaging business, political academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industrial agendas, Ms. Grynspan joined Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao among those to address the three-day Forum.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s Forum – Mastering Quality Growth – her opening remarks outlined the UN concept of quality growth as the one that is both inclusive and sustainable; which expands the number of people who participate productively in the economy, as well as the number who benefit from its growth. In doing so, she also highlighted the need to move away from a tendency to focus on the speed of growth and physical infrastructures to one that gives equal consideration to the poor and vulnerable in society.
“Constructing physical infrastructures, such as schools, day cares, and health clinics can be a powerful way to reduce disparities when directed to vulnerable populations and poor communities. So can expanding access to safe water, sanitation, and reliable energy”, she said.
“However, to be truly successful in mastering quality growth, we need not only to build these physical infrastructures, but also what we call the social infrastructure. This means the development of the institutions, legal frameworks, property rights, regulations including financial regulations and capacities necessary for inclusive, sustainable and dynamic growth.”
