Low Carbon Campaign Encourages Greater Environmental Awareness among Drivers
On 19 September, an event was held to mark the commencement of a one-year ‘Green Drive Action’ initiative, as part of the broader ‘China Low-Carbon Actions’ project organised by the All China Environment Federation (ACEF). In front of over 1,000 participants, representing government, environmental organisations, private sector companies and a large media presence, Secretary General of the ACEF, Mr. Zeng Xiaodong, officially launched this new programme alongside Mr Mao Rubai, ACEF Director, and Mr. Jia Feng, Director-General of the Publicity Department in the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
UNDP Deputy Country Director, Ms Silvia Morimoto gave a speech at the event, in which she highlighted the importance of local community group action in protecting the environment. She also spoke of the indispensible role of the ACEF in having provided a platform for both the public and private sector to work together in support of this campaign. Her remarks were followed by a short video message from UNDP Goodwill Ambassador and famous actress, Ms. Zhou Xun, and green bracelets calling for a commitment to drive one less day per week were distributed among participants in order to promote fuel use and emissions reductions and car sharing.
Together with UN Volunteers and the Beijing Volunteers Federation, UNDP is a member of the Beijing Volunteer Green Partnership, a network of national and international organisations working together to promote environmental awareness among the general public.
