    The launch of the Emerging Countries Network for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

    A roundtable event held in Beijing on 11 July 2011 marked the launch of the Emerging Countries Network for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth. This joint initiative, established between UNDP China and the Institute of Advanced Studies for Sustainability at Renmin University, aims to promote a diversified perspective towards South-South Cooperation among leading academic institutions and experts in emerging countries by sharing development experiences and lessons.

    Pioneering Social Management Innovation in China

    The launch of the China Academy of Social Management and the First Social Management Forum in China were held together on 7 May 2011. Co-organised by UNDP and hosted by Beijing Normal University, this event was attended by Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCCPC), Mr. Zhen Zongxing, UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Renata Dessallien, and a number of other senior representatives from Chinese ministries, policy research institutes and think tanks.

    International Seminar on the Jury System and Wuzhong People’s Assessors System

    An International Seminar on the Chinese Jury System was organised by the Personnel Department of the Supreme People’s Court and hosted by the Wuzhong District Court in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, on 11-12 May 2011. With over 85 judges and officials from local and central court systems, and representatives from the People’s Congress, EU China Delegation, the Chinese Institute of Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE) and UNDP in attendance, the seminar provided stakeholders with a comprehensive summary of the achievements made in piloting People’s Assessor reforms in Wuzhong.

    Seminar on Financing of Micro and Small Enterprises: Experience from China

    A seminar on Financing of Micro and Small Enterprises: Experience from China was jointly organised by the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) and UNDP on 20 June 2011. The seminar brought together government officials and experts from Asia and Africa and provided an opportunity for participants to share experiences in the adaptation, improvement and application of micro-financing as a fundamental component in poverty reduction initiatives. Among those present, were Mr. Wei Chongjin, Deputy Director-General of the IPRCC, and Mr. Napoleon Navarro, UNDP Country Director a.i.

    International Forum on Judges Training

    Organized by the National Judges College, under the EU-China Delegation and UNDP’s Governance for Equitable Development Project, the International Forum on Judges Training was held in Beijing on 7-10 June 2011. The event was attended by UNDP Deputy Country Director, Ms. Silvia Morimoto, and Justice Wan E’Xiang, Vice-President of the Supreme Court of China, as well as a number of foreign legal dignitaries and scholars from China, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, South Korea, the United States, Hong Kong and Macau.

    Climate Change and Green Low Carbon Development Conference

    A high-level international conference on Climate Change and Green Low Carbon Development was conducted in Beijing on 22-24 June 2011, as part of the National Development and Reform Commission’s (NDRC) efforts to demonstrate the policies and actions being undertaken by the Chinese Government to address climate change and shift towards a low carbon economy. Promoted as a platform for enhanced policy dialogue and climate financing, within an international framework of cooperation, the event was attended by over 300 senior representatives from global development stakeholders, including the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, foreign financial investment institutions and multinational enterprises, and leaders from some of China’s low carbon pilot provinces and cities.

Sponsored by the China Research Society for Public Sector Reform and hosted by its local counterparts, the Shanxi Provincial Commission Office for Public Sector Reform and the Shanxi Provincial Society for Public Sector Reform, this conference provided a platform for dialogue on practical solutions to challenges in promoting PSU reform.

Sponsored by the China Research Society for Public Sector Reform and hosted by its local counterparts, the Shanxi Provincial Commission Office for Public Sector Reform and the Shanxi Provincial Society for Public Sector Reform, this conference provided a platform for dialogue on practical solutions to challenges in promoting PSU reform. It was attended by senior government officials from more than 10 provinces representing north, south and east China, including Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Hainan, who were joined by researchers from the National Development Research Centre of the State Council and experts on governance and public sector reform at Peking University.

    Resident Representative Visits Guiyang

    On 8-9 June 2011, UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Renata Dessallien travelled to Guiyang City during an official visit in order to strengthen relations with provincial government leaders. During her visit, Ms. Dessallien met with the Vice-Governor of Guizhou Province, Mr. Xie Qinsheng and discussed possible areas of cooperation in sustainable development, inclusive growth and ethnic diversity. She also emphasized UNDP’s commitment to development initiatives in Guiyang and support towards the Eco-Forum Guiyang (EFG) in separate meetings with the Party Secretary of Guiyang Municipality, Mr. Li Jun; Secretary General of the EFG, Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, and the Mayor of Guiyang, Mr. Li Zaiyong.

    China in the World UN Theme Group: Presentation on Ten Years of China in the WTO by Mr. Long Yongtu

    On the afternoon of Wednesday 1 June 2011, the United Nations hosted Mr Long Yongtu, Secretary General of Centre for the Study of G20, at a meeting of the China in the World UN Theme Group. Mr Long led China's negotiations to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ten years ago, and was previously commended by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for his outstanding contribution to the UN. In his talk, Mr Long discussed the changes that have occurred since China joined the WTO, and what affects the accession has had on China, both for governance and everyday life. Mr Long noted that there were several key areas in that had changed since 2001, particularly Chinese attitudes and understanding of the outside world. He spoke about what had gone as expected, what has been different, and what lessons might be learned by other countries hoping to join the WTO in the future.

    UNDP and Jala Group Engage in Fact Finding Mission

    On 30 May 2011, a five-day fact finding mission in Yunnan Province was undertaken by UNDP, Jala Group, the Chinese International Centre for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE) and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission (SEAC). This included visits to two of the main project sites earmarked for assistance under UNDP’s partnership with Jala Group on the sustainable development of cultural industries among China’s ethnic minorities. Visiting some of the Huayao Dai and Musuo minorities in Xinping Village and Wunquan Village, respectively, representatives from visiting parties, including Jala Group’s Public Relations Director, Ms. Jenny Chen, met with local government officials and community leaders to discuss issues and challenges, as well as some urgent issues that are to be addressed under this new partnership.

    Democratic Governance Thematic Trust Fund Conducts Project Review

    Following the successful completion of the Democratic Governance Thematic Trust Fund Project: Support for the Development of a Governance Assessment Framework in China, a review mission was conducted by the UNDP Oslo Governance Centre (OGC) in Beijing on 23-28 May 2011. Throughout the event proceedings, experts from the OGC and the UNDP Asia Pacific Regional Centre (APRC) held highly productive discussions with the project’s main partners, including the China Centre for Comparative Politics and Economics (CCCPE), the China Academy of Governance, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Renmin University, Unirule Institute of Economics and the Shining Stone Community Action Group.
