    UN and China Mark International Poverty Eradication Day with Major Forum

    A high-level forum was held in Beijing on 17 October 2011 to mark the 19th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, bringing together government leaders, policy makers, development practitioners, and other members of the international community, to exchange ideas on how best to accelerate sustainable poverty reduction in China and globally. It is the fifth time that this global annual event has been held in China and this year's 2011 Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum was attended by more than 200 representatives from over 30 countries, including Chinese Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu, and UNDP Administrator, Ms. Helen Clark.

    UN and China Mark International Poverty Eradication Day with Major Forum

    A high-level forum was held today in Beijing to mark the 19th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, bringing together government leaders, policy makers, development practitioners, and other members of the international community, to exchange ideas on how best to accelerate and achieve sustainable poverty reduction in China and globally. More than 200 representatives from over 30 countries attended the 2011 Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum, which was hosted by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development of China and the UN System in China, and co-organised by International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) and UNDP China.

    As the world observed the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, an award ceremony and exhibition were held today to mark the conclusion of the “Zoom-in on Poverty” Global Photo Contest.     Beijing passes the Olympic Volunteer Legacy torch to London

    After sharing the 2008 Olympic Volunteer work experience with the 2010 Shanghai Expo, 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and Kazakhstan 2011 Asian Winter Games, Beijing has now completed the Olympic Volunteer legacy transfer journey by passing the torch to the next Olympic Games host city, London. A delegation composed by an expert of the Beijing Olympic Volunteer Expert Roster, a Beijing Volunteer Federation officer in charge of the Olympic Volunteer Legacy, China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges and UNV China Field Unit exchanged information with representatives of the Greater London Authority and the Executive Olympic Committee in an interactive session on 22nd September.

    Low Carbon Campaign Encourages Greater Environmental Awareness among Drivers

    On 19 September, an event was held to mark the commencement of a one-year ‘Green Drive Action’ initiative, as part of the broader ‘China Low-Carbon Actions’ project organised by the All China Environment Federation (ACEF). In front of over 1,000 participants, representing government, environmental organisations, private sector companies and a large media presence, Secretary General of the ACEF, Mr. Zeng Xiaodong, officially launched this new programme alongside Mr Mao Rubai, ACEF Director, and Mr. Jia Feng, Director-General of the Publicity Department in the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

    Associate Administrator Discusses South-South Cooperation with Ministry of Civil Affairs

    UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, met with Vice Minister of Civil Affairs, Mr. Sun Shaocheng on 16 September 2011. During the meeting, Ms. Grynspan acknowledged the achievements of an existing 3-year trilateral partnership between UNDP, MOCA and the European Union. In addition, she also pointed to the role of UNDP-MOCA cooperation in assisting civil society organisations gain greater political and legal recognition. Mr. Shun commended UNDP for its longstanding commitment to disaster management, civil society organisations and the protection of vulnerable groups in China.

    Recognising academia as an important contributor to China’s ability to share its development experiences with the world, through South-South Cooperation, Under Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan took part in a special guest lecture entitled ‘Towards Sustainable Development: New Challenges and Opportunities’. Held at Peking University, on 16 September 2011, Ms. Grynspan was accompanied by a large UNDP delegation including UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Renata Dessallien. As President of Peking University, Professor Zhou Qifeng was also in attendance.

    UNDP Recognises Peace and Development Foundation at Award Ceremony

    An award ceremony was held on the afternoon of 16 September 2011 in Beijing to recognise the tremendous support rendered to the work of UNDP in China by the Peace and Development Foundation (PDF). During this event, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator, presented Honourary Awards to Mr. Daniel Fung, Chairman and Founding Member of the PDF, and Ms. Kathy Chiu, Chairperson Emeritus and Founding Member of the PDF. A separate Appreciation Award was also presented to Ms. Josie Jin Zhou, UNDP China Chief Advisor for Hong Kong and the Macao Special Administrative Regions.
